To understand the principals upon which Private Garden Greenhouse Systems was built, we must look back to a time shortly before the Company's founding in Hampden, Massachusetts.  The year is 1984.

During the early 1980s, Joseph Hickson Jr., Private Garden President, worked as an independent representative for a certain U.S. greenhouse manufacturing firm. When this firm suddenly declared bankruptcy shortly after Joe began working with the firm, Joe made a decision that would change the course of the Hickson family forever.

Knowing the inconvenience and potential disruption to business that the bankruptcy would cause clients who had recently placed deposits on greenhouses, Joe, along with his wife, Kathy, made a personal commitment to each of these clients to do what was right:  they pledged to fulfill these clients' contracts and ensure that their dreams of owning their very own greenhouse structures would be fulfilled.

Over the course of the next year, to each client's relief and satisfaction, Joe and Kathy fulfilled each and every one of those contracts. In that manner, Private Garden, a Division of Hampden Structural Systems, was born.

For the next few years, Joe and Kathy found success with Private Garden by purchasing and selling greenhouses created by U.S. manufacturers. As independent representatives, they never lost sight of the principals they began with: integrity, empathy and a commitment to high-level customer service.

During the late 1980's, always looking out for their clients' best interest, Joe and Kathy decided it was time for Private Garden to develop its own line of greenhouse structures. Well aware of the stellar reputation earned by several European companies for their advanced greenhouse technology and unsurpassed quality, Joe and Kathy spent years searching for manufacturers to work with.  They looked for manufacturers that shared a similar commitment to customer service quality and structural integrity.  This time was well-spent.
