The Pithouse Style

The Pithouse model is used primarily by those focusing on vegetables and seedling propagation. Due to its shallow height it allows the heat to produced through the “greenhouse effect” to keep low and close to the plants within the structure. As low as this system is to the ground, you are able to optimize the cross ventilation with the cool air coming directly off the ground surrounding the greenhouse

Lean To Style
The traditional lean-to glasshouse is used on locations with premium southern exposure. These structures are three sided glasshouses with the rear wall, in most cases, existing from a previous glasshouse or property barrier. The model’s use of southern exposure allows the most sunlight to hit the entire glasshouse without the shadow effect caused by a ridge beam running through it.

Thomas Messenger had a passion for plants and the greenhouses that allowed them to thrive. World famous in the 19th century for his functional yet beautiful greenhouses, his attention to detail and drive for perfection did much to create and spread Britain's reputation for gardening around the globe.
