To understand the principals upon which Private Garden Greenhouse Systems was built, we must look back to a time shortly before its founding in Hampden, Massachusetts in 1984.

During that period, Joseph Hickson Jr., Private Garden President, worked as an independent representative for a certain U.S. greenhouse manufacturing firm. When suddenly this firm declared bankruptcy, shortly after Joe began, a decision was made that would change the course of the Hickson family forever.

Knowing the dire straights this put several clients into who had recently placed deposits on their greenhouses, Joe, along with his wife, Kathy, made a personal commitment to each of these clients to do what was right; fulfill these clients’ contracts and their dreams of owning their very own greenhouse structures.

Over the course of the next year, to each client’s relief and satisfaction, Joe and Kathy fulfilled each and every one of those contracts. Hereby, Private Garden, a Division of Hampden Structural Systems, was born.

For the next few years, Joe and Kathy found success with Private Garden by purchasing and selling greenhouses created by U.S. manufacturers. As independent representatives, they never lost sight of the principals they began with: integrity, empathy and a commitment to high-level customer service.

In the late 1980’s, always looking out for their clients’ best interest, Joe and Kathy decided it was time Private Garden developed its own line of greenhouse structures. Well aware of the reputation Europe had earned for their advanced greenhouse technology and unsurpassed quality, Joe and Kathy spent years in search of manufacturers that cared about clients and quality as much as they did; this time was well spent.
